The omphalos, was the place marked the center of the earth by Zues, and the place where the Temple of the Oracle at Delphi was built. The story is that when Zeus wanted to find the center of the Earth, he threw two birds up into the sky. They flew at equal speeds in opposite direcetions, and the place where their paths crossed was marked the Omphalos- or center of the earth. It is also the word for naval. This is my interpretation of the flight of the birds across the earth and the marking of the center.
